Ensuring Dad’s Effects Go To Loving New Home

Ensuring Dad’s Effects Go To Loving New Home

Furniture Care, Interior Design
One of the more interesting things I got involved with over the last few weeks was helping to clear out a bungalow with a pal whose father had recently entered a care home.  This meant that the bungalow needed to be totally cleared, decorated and made good for renting out.  The rent would go a little way to half of one week's care fees. After sorting the wardrobes and small stuff like china and bakeware etc - bagged up for the charity shops, we started on the furniture.   There were beds, wardrobes chests - we thought we'd struggle to dispose of them, assuming no one wanted anything that wasn't from the swedish emporium, but the local auction house were thrilled to collect.  Everything had been so lovingly cared for. …

Boxing Day To Black Friday – Sales Are Sales

Boxing Day To Black Friday – Sales Are Sales

Furniture Care, Interior Design
It's that time of year again when the massive furnishing companies are forking out an arm and a leg to advertise their  wares - and if we're all jolly quick and order now, we can have our chosen suite in time for Christmas.  This is the clarian call every December - and in February we hear sob stories from consumers who ordered, paid out a hefty whack, but did not get a suite by Christmas, or did, but it wasn't the gloriously huge leather number they thought they'd ordered. There is a tendency for companies to look to Christmas as the panacea of all ills in the commercial world these days.  It is possible that the Black Friday madness we imported form the US has had a different effect on…

Sourcing Designs To Suit Building Age & Era

Furniture Care, Interior Design
I am currently surrounded by family members who have either just moved house and are mid refurb and adjust, or are mid move and planning how they are going to fill their new palace of glittering delights!  When you have been used to confining your living habits to a small, perfectly formed, starter home, it must be something more than just a dream to know that shortly you will be getting two or three times the space in each of the rooms. In this scenario, one of the couple has been busily sourcing ideas on line.  Being in the web based industry they have many contacts and companies they can talk to.  They seek new furniture that will not look out of place in a conversion - so beamed home,…

Upsizing Requires Thoughful Planning

Upsizing Requires Thoughful Planning

Furniture Care, Interior Design
Funny how when you buy your first home, it usually being quite small but hopefully well proprtioned, it is easy to get it furnished to a reasonable degree from either second hand shops or that very well known scandinavian home emporium.  The difficulty is agreeing on style and theme - there isn't always a great choice in design.  Just the size and multi purpose nature can be a factor - if you only have one or two bedrooms, then buying a suite that includes a good quality sofa bed could be the answer the many problems at Christmas. A young couple I know who are upsizing from a bijoux 3 bed starter home to a large and spacious stone conversion.  They feel sure that their current corner suite, square and…

Getting The Sofa Right Is The Priority

Getting The Sofa Right Is The Priority

Furniture Care, Interior Design
One of the enduring questions that crops up in family sized homes is what sort of sofa arrangement should we invest in. . . . . .  It can be an expensive mistake if one person chooses something and the others hate it and won't go near the sitting room!  On the other hand, if the wrong size is bought, or a limited design, then the family won't want to squeeze onto it anyway. Getting advice from a professional furnishing outlet, prefereably one of the independent retailers, means they will give ideas as to how certain layouts offer what benefits and whether a suggested idea might end up being too limiting.  The professionals really do know how to make the most of any given space and will be able to…

Choose the Best Furniture for Your Living Room

Choose the Best Furniture for Your Living Room

Interior Design
The living room is an important area of your home, whether you live alone or have a large family around you.  This is the room where you will spend a lot of time, and your guests will often spend most of their time here.  Choosing the right furniture to create a welcoming space which can hold up to the wear and tear of everyday life is vital for this part of your home. Firstly, you need to measure the space you are working with, to allow you to buy furniture which will fit in the room!  Get the widths, heights and lengths of each wall, allowing for any alcoves or recessed spaces too. Make up a floor plan using the dimensions you measured on graph paper.  This will help you…
